Our Founder
Sheikh Hussain Quraishi (rahimahullah), the Ameer of the Jama’at, founded the Islamic Missionary Association and led it from its incorporation on 7 July 1989 until he passed away on 1 June 2022.
He began with a handful of Muslims gathering for prayer in a leased coat factory in central Edmonton, a congregation then known as Daarul Arqam. Under his leadership that small jama’ah became Masjid Quba, first on 105 Avenue in 1998 and then, from 2013, in its present home on 118 Avenue. He was the public face of every campaign to build and expand the masjid. He was also among the first to see that Edmonton’s growing Muslim population would need more room.
His vision reached beyond one masjid. In southwest Edmonton he nurtured a small congregation from a basement, to a community hall, to rented space, and finally to the land where Masjid Ayesha now stands. Through his friendships, other communities joined the IMA family
Many of today’s teachers and imams first learned the Qur’an in his home. Until the end of his life he was still answering the community’s questions alongside the imams of Masjid Quba.
We pray that Allah accepts his efforts, forgives him, raises his rank and makes every prayer offered in these masajid a continuing charity (sadaqah jariyah) for him. Ameen.
